MONROE, Conn. — A 22-year-old Monroe man was charged with DUI after losing control of his red GMC Canyon on a left curve, going off the right side of Guinea Road, into an embankment and striking a tree on July 3, according to police. He was evaluated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel, but refused a trip to a hospital.
Police said the crash occurred when he was heading south around 11:05 p.m. Officers reportedly noticed the driver had a difficult time keeping his balance, his eyes were glossy and the odor of alcoholic beverage was emanating from him, the report said.
Asked where he was coming from, he told officers he was coming from Monroe and heading to Monroe, police said, adding the driver initially agreed to participate in field sobriety tests, but ultimately got distracted and began arguing with officers instead before ultimately refusing.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the incident, he was arrested. At headquarters he agreed to a breath test, which showed a blood alcohol level over three times the legal limit, according to police.
He was also charged with failure to drive in the proper lane and released after posting seven percent of his $500 bond. He was scheduled to appear in court on July 6.
Identity theft
A 56-year-old Saugerties, N.Y., man was arrested on a warrant July 4, charging him with identity theft. He allegedly used a fake license and personal information to open a fraudulent Union Savings Bank account in a Monroe resident’s name.
The resident became aware of the scam on August 17, 2025 when he received a letter from the bank regarding ATM information with an associated account number. He never opened an account with the bank, so he reported the incident to the local branch.
The account was flagged as fraudulent and closed. The branch manager learned the account had been opened in Roxbury.
The victim reported the fraud to police the next day. Through their investigation, detectives learned the suspect opened multiple accounts around the state, including at the Danbury and Kent branches, according to the report.
A suspect was developed out of Saugerties and town investigators found a matching Connecticut Department of Corrections photo and matching images from bank surveillance video, police said.
A warrant was applied for and signed and Bridgeport police called the Monroe Police Department on July 4 to say its officers had the suspect in custody.
Monroe officers picked him up in Bridgeport and charged him with identity theft in the third degree. He was also charged with an outstanding PRAWN warrant for failure to appear in court for an unrelated incident. He was released after posting seven percent of his $50,000 bond for a July 15 court date.
Avoiding a deer, getting a DUI
A 27-year-old Bridgeport man was charged with DUI after losing control of his black 2012 Mercedes on Cross Hill Road, just east of Elm Street, colliding with some trees and going into an embankment July 4.
He reportedly told officers he had swerved to avoid hitting a deer that ran into the roadway, causing the crash around 1:10 a.m. Police said he was not injured and the vehicle was towed from scene due to disabling damage.
While speaking with the driver, officers smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him and he admitted to having one beer, police said, adding he did not perform field sobriety tests to standard. Later at headquarters he refused to submit a breath sample, according to the report.
He was charged with DUI and failure to drive in the proper lane and released on seven percent of his $500 bond for a July 20 court date.
Police: Evading caught on camera
A Fairfield man staying at a house in Monroe was charged with evading after allegedly backing into the rear of a Honda Odyssey in the Capital Spirits parking lot at 574 Monroe Turnpike and taking off in his Ford F-150 pickup truck on Sunday.
A store employee noticed damage on his Honda after coming home from work that evening and called police just before 8 p.m. Police said Capital Spirits’ surveillance footage showed the pickup truck back into the SUV.
Officers found the owner of the truck at a house in Monroe and fresh damage on its rear was an exact match of where it allegedly hit the Honda, police said.
The man reportedly admitted to driving, but said he did not realize he hit another vehicle.
Police learned he already had a suspended driver’s license and there was an active PRAWN warrant for his arrest, charging him with failure to appear in court in the second degree and driving with a cellphone. Those charges stemmed from a traffic stop in Monroe on April 27.
He was released on seven percent of his $5,000 bond for a July 15 court date.
