MONROE, Conn. — This week marked the 49th anniversary of the tragic death of Renee Freer, an 8-year-old Monroe girl whose life was violently taken in the woods behind her Williams Road home on June 22, 1977. Nearly five decades later, Renee’s family, friends, neighbors and supporters remain unwavering in their commitment to seeking justice, preserving her memory and transforming her story into meaningful change.

The mission of the Justice for Renee Freer movement is simple but powerful: “Justice for Renee Freer means changing the law in Renee’s name and leaving her with a powerful legacy forever.”

For 49 years, those who loved Renee have refused to allow her story to fade into history. Through advocacy, public awareness, community engagement and the pursuit of legislative reform, they are determined to ensure that Renee’s life continues to make a difference for future generations.

Over the past month, the Justice for Renee Freer team coordinated a community-wide tribute campaign that brought together family members, lifelong friends, neighbors and supporters to share heartfelt video messages, audio recordings and personal reflections honoring Renee’s life. The response was overwhelming. Thousands of people engaged with the content across social media platforms, helping introduce Renee’s story to a new generation while reinforcing the community’s longstanding commitment to justice.

“Every share, every comment and every conversation helps keep Renee’s memory alive,” members of the Justice for Renee Freer team said. “The support has been emotional and inspiring. It reminds us that people still care, that Renee is not forgotten and that her story continues to resonate with people nearly five decades later.”

What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a movement with supporters across Connecticut and beyond. In recent years, the Justice for Renee Freer team has achieved several significant milestones, including

  • Growing the Justice for Renee Freer Facebook community to more than 1,200 members
  • Drafting Renee’s Law, proposed legislation designed to strengthen protections for child victims, improve accountability, and address gaps in the justice system that can allow violent offenders to escape prosecution
  • Meeting with Connecticut legislators, victim advocates and community leaders to build support for reform
  • Gathering more than 1,000 signatures through a Change.org petition supporting legislative action
  • Securing extensive media coverage throughout Connecticut
  • Appearing on national podcasts and expanding awareness of Renee’s case to audiences across the country
  • Launching a dedicated website featuring case information, historical records, updates, and advocacy resources
  • Building a growing network of supporters across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms

Despite this progress, advocates say their work is far from complete.

The Justice for Renee Freer team remains committed to advancing Renee’s Law in Connecticut and educating the public about the importance of protecting child victims. Their goal is not only to seek justice for Renee, but to create lasting change that helps prevent other families from experiencing similar heartbreak.

“For 49 years, no one has been held accountable for Renee’s death,” the group stated. “While we cannot change the past, we can honor Renee’s memory by creating a safer future for children and families. We owe it to Renee and to every child who deserves protection and justice to keep fighting. We will continue this effort for as long as it takes.”

As supporters pause to reflect on this solemn anniversary, the movement remains focused on turning remembrance into action, transforming grief into advocacy and ensuring that Renee Freer’s legacy inspires meaningful reform for generations to come.
