MONROE, Conn. — A 31-year-old Monroe man was charged with DUI early Sunday morning after allegedly failing to stop at a stop sign on Elm Street while heading east in his Ford Focus. An officer on patrol initiated a traffic stop around 12:44 a.m.
Police said the officer learned the driver’s registration had expired since August of 2024. While speaking to the driver, the officer noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him, though he denied having had any alcohol, the report said.
Field sobriety tests were not performed to standard, leading to his arrest, police said, adding officers found an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage on the floor behind the passenger seat while doing an inventory of the Ford Focus before it was towed.
At headquarters, breath tests showed a blood alcohol level over one-and-a-half times the legal limit, according to the report.
The driver was charged with DUI, failure to stop at a stop sign and driving an unregistered motor vehicle. He was released after posting seven percent of his $500 bond for an Aug. 3 court date.
Motorcycle crash
A motorcycle rider escaped injury following a two-vehicle-crash at the intersection of Elm Street and Route 111 Friday night.
At approximately 11 p.m., police said a 50-year-old Bridgeport man rode his 2012 Harley Davidson south on Monroe Turnpike and crashed into a 2020 Volvo XC60 turning left onto Elm Street.
The driver of the Volvo, a 29-year-old Monroe woman, told officers she had a green light when she turned left and didn’t see the motorcycle, police said. The Bridgeport man also said he had a green light when he continued straight through the intersection.
Both drivers told officers they had no injuries and declined medical attention and neither vehicle was towed, according to the report.
Police said the woman was issued a verbal warning for making an improper left turn.
