MONROE, CT — Many town homes rely on wells for residents’ drinking water. In fact, 49 percent of Monroe is served by one of four public drinking water watersheds, including Means Brook, Hurds Brook, West Pequonnock and Easton Lake, according to Peter Fazekas, director of corporate communications for Aquarion Water Company.

Visitors to the Monroe Farmers’ Market on the town green can learn more facts about public watersheds by visiting Your Water Matters, a featured public outreach at the “Hometown Table” of the market on Friday, June 27.

The table will be sponsored and staffed by local authorities from Aquarion Water Company, the Monroe Conservation & Water Commission, Monroe Health Department, and the Inland Wetlands Commission, who will be bringing awareness to the local watershed.

“Please stop by and ask us why,” said Inland Wetlands Officer Andrew Brodtman.

Aside from answering questions about your specific address and wetlands areas, information will be provided on subjects such as residential well testing or how to obtain permits for improvement projects near wetlands.

There will be giveaways and informational pamphlets on water use and conservation in Monroe. Visitors are also encouraged to enter a free drawing to take home one of the two 60 gallon rain barrels donated from Aquarion.

Rick Smith, a member of the Monroe Inland Wetlands Commission, said rain barrels can be put under a gutter outlet to collect rainwater for a variety of uses.

“I use it for my garden and my lawn,” he said. “It doesn’t provide a lot of pressure in my house, but I can wash my car with it.”

Shower timers will be another possible giveaway at the farmers’ market, according to Smith.
