MONROE, CT — Two drivers were hospitalized following a crash at the intersection of Route 110 and Wheeler Road Friday morning.
At approximately 11:21 a.m., police said an 85-year-old Stratford man was heading north on Wheeler Road in his 2017 Subaru Outback when he disobeyed a stop sign and crashed into the driver’s side of a 2023 Kia Sorrento heading west on Route 110 (Shelton Road).
The Stratford man and the other driver, a 66-year-old Shelton woman, both told officers they sustained injuries. They were evaluated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel and taken to a hospital.
The Stratford man reportedly told police did not see oncoming traffic and thought it was safe to proceed, before entering the intersection and hitting the Kia. He was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.
An $8,300 scam
A 22-year-old Monroe woman lost $8,300 in a phone scam, according to a complaint filed on March 5.
She told officers a man claiming to work for the government contacted her on Feb. 14, telling her he could invest money on her behalf for a profit.
She sent him $300 via Venmo. Then he called and asked if she had any more money to invest. She admitted she had $8,000, police said.
The victim told officers she woke up the next day to multiple texts asking her to invest the rest of her money. Then she began to receive threatening messages that she could be in trouble with law enforcement and the IRS, police said.
In response to the threats, police said the woman sent the caller $8000 with Apple Pay and Zell payments.
The caller told her she needed to invest more money. When she said she didn’t have money, the caller deposited two checks into her account, one for $5,000 and one for $5,500.
Police said the woman was later notified by M&T Bank that both checks had bounced. That’s when she contacted law enforcement.
When police called the phone number the scammer used, a message said the Google subscriber is unavailable, according to the report.
DUI arrest
A 46-year-old Stratford woman was charged with DUI after an officer pulled her over on Main Street for allegedly driving erratically in her Hyundai Santa Fe Sunday night.
While talking to the driver, the officer observed that her eyes were bloodshot and glassy, her speech was slurred and he detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath, according to police, who said she admitted to drinking at a vineyard.
Field sobriety tests were not performed to standard, leading to her arrest, police said. Later at headquarters, the driver refused to submit to a breath test, police said.
She was charged with DUI and failure to maintain the proper lane, then released on $500 bond for a March 24 court date.
The incident occurred near Knollwood Street at approximately 9:45 p.m.
One-vehicle-crash
A 50-year-old Shelton woman was evaluated by Monroe EMS, but refused a trip to a hospital, after hitting the guide wire to a utility pole at the corner of Old Coach Road and Route 111 (Monroe Turnpike) with her 2014 Nissan Rogue Sunday morning.
She reportedly told officers she was heading north on Route 111 when she attempted to pass a vehicle in front of her with its hazard lights on. As she was passing it, she said the other driver tried to turn. While attempting to avoid a collision, she said she lost control of her Nissan.
Police said the Nissan crossed the double yellow center line, went off the road to left and struck a curb, before hitting the guide wire.
The driver was given a verbal warning for failure to drive in the proper lane.
