Sun shines on Monroe Farmers’ Market’s opening day

MONROE, CT — The Monroe Farmers’ Market opened its 2025 season on a warm, sunny Friday afternoon, when market manager, Kelly Plunkett, rang the bell on the green in front of Town Hall.

Families, couples, some with dogs on leashes, listened to live music played in the gazebo while walking the grounds and shopping for fresh produce, flowers, baked bread, seafood, pizza and more.

Alyssa Fernandes, of Monroe, bought cups of a frozen mixed-berry treat from Addeo’s All-Natural Italian Ice for her daughters, Ava and Ellie.

“We were looking forward to opening day, because my daughter has food allergies and she can get her ‘ice cream’ here,” Fernandes said of Ellie.

Another parent, whose daughter was coloring at a table at the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School’s booth, said she decided to take advantage of the beautiful day on her children’s first day out of school.

The Monroe Farmers’ Market will be held on the green every Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. up until Oct. 24. In the above video, Plunkett talks about this year’s market.
