Stingy defense nearly leads to upset win for South West United girls hockey

The South West United girls hockey team, which includes players from Masuk High, competed in the SCC Tournament this week and played in a pair of exciting games.

The SWU team lost to top seed and host West Haven 3-2 in triple overtime on Wednesday night. Cam Ouellette and Hannah Newman had goals and goaltender Jen Velky stood tall with a 51-save performance. SWU led 2-1 before West Haven forced OT by scoring with 17 seconds left.

South West United was coming off a 4-0 win over Guilford in the first round, at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton on Feb. 24. Oulette had three goals and Lia Spermullo had a goal and two assists. Arianna Bartolomei and Velky combined on a 12-save shutout.
