MONROE, Conn. — A stolen purple Dodge Challenger was abandoned on Knollwood Street with its hood open, according to a police report from residents who became concerned after it was seen unattended in their neighborhood for several hours Thursday evening.
Officers looked in the windows and immediately noticed the emergency brake was popped out of the center console. Further investigation revealed the rear license plate was bent in toward the bumper and there appeared to be fresh paint scratches on the bumper, as if it was pushed by another vehicle.
The Dodge was registered to a Shelton woman, who told police her car was supposed to be at Monroe Auto Sales on Main Street, because the owner of the business was attempting to sell it for her.
The woman arrived at the scene and confirmed damage to the bumper and the interior was new.
The owner of Monroe Auto Sales told officers he put the car up for sale on Wednesday and parked it near the road. It had no gas in the tank, he added. Police also confirmed he still had the key to the vehicle.
The car was released to its owner and the Monroe Police Detective Division is continuing to investigate.
DUI on Elm St.
A 41-year-old Monroe man was charged with DUI after allegedly failing to obey a stop sign at the intersection of Elm Street and Cross Hill Road early Wednesday morning.
Police said officer pulled over a blue Ford Ranger in the 300-block of Elm Street at approximately 1:03 a.m. and that the driver’s eyes were red and glossy and he had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him.
He denied having consumed any alcohol, police said, adding he did not perform field sobriety tests to standard and breath tests at headquarters showed a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.
He was charged with DUI and failure to obey a stop sign and released on seven percent of his $500 bond for an Aug. 4 court date.
Thefts from vehicles
A Pepper Street couple reported thefts from their unlocked vehicles sometime overnight, between Monday and Tuesday, according to police.
Police said a tan Crossbody purse containing the female victim’s driver’s license, credit cards and $15 cash was stolen from her vehicle, and her husband’s wallet, containing his license, credit cards and cash, was taken from his vehicle.
Both victims contacted their bank, put a freeze on their credit, and were told to contact police if there is any suspicious activity on their accounts.
