Signups open for Newtown Savings Bank’s 4th annual Mile Down the Pike

Jasper McHugh, 13, races to a record-setting finish in the annual Mile Down the Pike race last year.

MONROE, Conn. — Runners are training for the fourth annual Newtown Savings Bank Mile Down the Pike, the race that takes place on Route 111 just before the start of Monroe’s Memorial Day Parade. The event is scheduled to be held on May 24. All proceeds will be donated to the Monroe Memorial Day Parade Committee to place flags on Monroe veterans gravesites in town, as well as to benefit veterans organizations.

Paul Moyse, the founder of the event, said the Mile Down the Pike promotes a healthy lifestyle, whether participants run it or can do a brisk walk and complete the course within the 15-minute minimum.

“This can be a motivation to get people into exercise,” he said. “One key is just getting people moving. I love the fact we had the Sprint for Monroe for many years, now I’m glad we have the Mile Down the Pike, because I see people starting to exercise to get ready for the race. I love the healthy part of this race and the training.”

Moyse, a chiropractor in town, was involved with the Sprint for Monroe for over three decades until the annual 5k race ended its long run in 2023. He is now the co-race director for the Mile Down the Pike with Amy Primorac.

“We’re excited to be able to hold the fourth annual Mile Down the Pike again this year,” Primorac said. “This event is so much fun. Everyone finishes the race with a smile on their face, gushing about how much fun it is to run the parade route. Last year was our biggest year yet and we’re hoping to exceed that with the 2026 race. Plus you can’t beat a mile that is completely downhill — it is the fastest mile you’ll ever run.”

Awards will be given for first, second and third place within each age group and snacks and hydration will be available after the event.

There is a two dollar discount for those signing up for the race by April 10. To get the discount, use the coupon code: MDTPEarly, which is case sensitive, so the capitalization is important. Click on this link to sign up. Click here to donate to the event.
