Police investigate fatal Route 59 crash that claimed the life of a Monroe man

EASTON, CT — The Easton Police Department with the assistance of the Fairfield Police Department Crash Investigation Unit continues to investigate a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on Nov. 24 at about 5 p.m.

The deceased was a passenger in a 2014 Jeep Patriot that was traveling northbound on Route 59 south of Maple Road. He was identified as Kenneth Lowman, 84, of Monroe. Lowman retired from the Stamford Police Department on April 22, 1984, after serving 22 years as a police 0fficer.  Two other people involved in the accident remain hospitalized.

Investigators have determined that a 2014 Jeep Patriot was traveling northbound on Route 59.  The Jeep crossed the double yellow line and sideswiped a 2019 Hyundai Sonata.  The Jeep continued north in the southbound lane where it impacted with a 2019 Nissan Sentra.

The investigation is ongoing. Search warrants are being obtained so investigators can do mechanical inspections of the vehicles and a thorough search of the interiors. The cars’ computers, known as the Event Data Recorders (EDR), will also be examined.  The EDR provides information such as speed, turning radius, braking power, seat belt usage, airbag deployment, shifter position and other data.

These searches along with the physical evidence obtained at the scene will be used to determine the cause of the accident.
