Perillo votes no on state tax increase

HARTFORD, CT – State Sen. Jason Perillo, R-Shelton, voted no on S.B.1246 citing major concerns about the negative impact it would have on taxpayers and the long-term fiscal health of the state. This bill includes significant tax increases, additional government spending, and changes that could undermine Connecticut’s strong budgetary guardrails, according to Perillo.

“This bill proposes raising taxes by approximately $600 million over the next two years,” he said. “It includes the largest business tax hike in over a decade at a time when Connecticut already ranks among the highest-taxed states in the country. The last thing we need is yet another tax increase.”

In addition to tax hikes, the bill includes off-budget spending and provisions that threaten Connecticut’s carefully constructed budgetary guardrails that have helped stabilize state finances in recent years, Perillo said.

“What concerns me most are the proposed tax increases and the lack of fairness in how they are applied,” Perillo said. “Instead of placing a greater burden on one group, we should be working toward a more balanced and equitable tax system — one that encourages hard work, rewards success, and lifts up all residents.”

Perillo emphasized the need for a more thoughtful approach to tax policy — one that ensures fiscal responsibility without sacrificing fairness. “Raising revenue should never come at the cost of fairness,” he said. “That’s why I voted no on S.B. 1246, and I urged my colleagues who value a fair tax system to do the same.”
