Masuk baseball advances to state quarterfinals

Nate O'Hara and the Panthers will be home for state playoff action Saturday at 12 p.m.

WATERBURY, Conn. — Masuk High’s baseball team, the No. 12 seed, defeated host and No. 5 Kaynor Tech 6-2 in the second round of the Class L State Tournament on Tuesday.

The Panthers took the lead in the top of the second when Nate O’Hara hit an RBI ground out scoring Al Morgenthaler. Kaynor responded with two runs in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth Masuk tied the score at 2-2 on a Matt Boyle RBI single that scored Nico Convertito. In the top of the sixth, Masuk took the lead when a two-run single by Austin Patti scored Nate O’Hara and Ethan Fonck.

Masuk added another run in the sixth when Jerson Perez distracted Kaynor fielders in a rundown and pinch runner Brian Hourigan stole home. Masuk extended the lead to 6-2 in the top of the seventh when Convertito singled, stole second and third base and then scored on a wild pitch.

Austin Patti pitched the final four innings without giving up a run to get the win. Patti allowed only one hit while striking out seven batters and walking none.

Next up for Masuk is a date with No. 20 Bristol Eastern. The quarterfinals will be held at Masuk’s John Giampaolo Field on Saturday, June 6, at 12 p.m.
