No-hitter and homer for Masuk pitcher in state playoff win

Masuk pitcher Mary Saunders, in action this spring, had a no-hitter and homer in a state playoff win over Torrington.

MONROE, Conn. — No. 4 Masuk blanked No. 13 Torrington 12-0 in a mercy-rule, five-inning no-hitter by pitcher Mary Saunders in Class L State Tournament second-round action on Wednesday.

Saunders struck out 10 batters and launched a solo homer to get the scoring started.

Grace Ely (two RBIs), Peyton Webb and Julianna Falcone (two RBIs) paced the offense with three hits apiece helping power a 17-hit attack.

Offensive contributions came from throughout the lineup in a complete team effort. Ciena Perpetuo had three RBIs, Izzy DeBernardo drove in two runs and Makayla Gill and Josie Lieto each had a run batted in.

Masuk, which had a bye in the first round, will host No. 5 Jonathan Law of Milford in the quarterfinals on Friday at 4 p.m.
