Newtown Savings Bank offers benefits veterans ahead of Mile Down the Pike

MONROE, Conn. — There is still time to sign up for the fourth annual Newtown Savings Bank Mile Down the Pike set for this Sunday, May 24. As it approaches, the title sponsor is offering enhanced banking benefits for military service members, veterans and eligible family members.

“Newtown Savings Bank values the military and veteran community and recognizes the service and sacrifice these individuals and their families have made,” said Brian Fonck, FVP, retail banking and deposit product management. “These programs reflect our commitment to not only supporting military and veteran customers, but doing so with care, respect, and a high-level of service throughout their banking relationship.”

The Newtown Savings Bank Mile Down the Pike takes place on Route 111 just before the start of Monroe’s Memorial Day Parade and all proceeds will be donated to the Monroe Memorial Day Parade Committee to place flags on Monroe veterans gravesites in town, as well as to benefit veterans organizations.

Military and Veteran Banking Products

Newtown Savings Bank offers banking and lending programs designed to support military service members, veterans, and eligible family members. These programs provide reduced fees and access to VA‑backed mortgage financing to help meet everyday banking needs and support long‑term financial goals. Effective May 12, 2026, Newtown Savings Bank will provide enhanced deposit account terms for eligible military service members and veterans. Participants will receive:

  • Premier Checking with the monthly service fee waived
  • Statement Savings with the monthly service fee waived

This program is designed to reduce ongoing banking costs for eligible customers.

How the Program Works

  • Eligible customers may open or convert to a Premier Checking account with no monthly service fee.
  • Eligible customers may open a Statement Savings account with the monthly fee waived.
  • Existing customers may request account conversion.
  • All account features, terms, and conditions otherwise remain unchanged.

The benefits include access to online, mobile and branch banking services.

Veterans Affairs (VA) Home Loan Program

Program Description: Newtown Savings Bank offers Veterans Affairs (VA) Loans to veterans, active‑duty service members, and qualifying surviving spouses. These government‑backed loans help expand access to mortgage financing and support homeownership.

How the Program Works

  • Borrowers apply for a VA‑backed mortgage through Newtown Savings Bank.
  • Loans are guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Applicants work directly with bank mortgage staff throughout the application and closing process.
  • VA Loans may be used to purchase or refinance a primary residence.

  • No down payment options
  • Competitive interest rates
  • No private mortgage insurance (PMI)
  • Flexible credit guidelines
  • Higher allowable debt‑to‑income ratios

Deposit Account Enhancements will be effective May 12, 2026. The VA Loan Program is currently available.
