MONROE, CT — Town Clerk Vida Stone and assistant town clerks, Sue DeGeorge and Peggy Scalzo, donated an October Glory Maple tree, which was planted outside the police station at Monroe Town Hall in celebration of Arbor Day during a small ceremony Monday morning.
The tree, which can be seen from the window of the Town Clerk’s Office, produces ornate red leaves in the fall and should grow to 40-to-50 feet tall and 30-to-40 feet wide at its peak.
First Selectman Terry Rooney read a proclamation Monday, when the town celebrated its 21st year as a Tree City USA community.
Stone said she did some reading up about Arbor Day, finding it has to do with climate change and the planting of trees. One quote that stuck with her was, “plant a tree. It’s a vote for our future.” “I like that,” Stone said.
Among the town officials attending the tree planting ceremony were Parks and Recreation Director Missy Orosz, Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman Jonathan Stone, Park Ranger Christopher Tucci, who handled the application process, and Public Works Deputy Director Bill Phillips.
