MONROE, Conn. — Monroe Republican Town Committee members collected nonperishable food donations for the Monroe Food Pantry outside both entrances to Stop & Shop Sunday, while handing out miniature American flags and 250th Anniversary commemorative flags to celebrate Flag Day.

Ken Kellogg, the town’s former first selectman, handed a flag to a little girl who walked by with her mother, who dug a few dollar bills out of her purse and stuffed it into a container for cash donations.

“One guy donated a $100 check,” Kellogg said of the day’s financial donations. “We’ve got an awful lot of cash donations. A lot of times the pantry uses that for meat and fresh produce. They can always use cash donations.”

Kellogg said one woman, who went to the store for the bottle returns noticed that area was closed, so she donated her bottles to the food drive. Volunteers will cash in the bottles another day and give the money to the Monroe Food Pantry.

Kellogg was accepting donations with fellow RTC members and volunteers, Jack Testani, Geoffrey Medeiros and State Rep. Tony Scott, R-Monroe. Others also volunteered throughout the day, including First Selectman Terry Rooney.

At the other store entrance, State Rep. Dona-Lyn Wales and Elizabeth Edgerton also collected donations from shoppers.

Edgerton said some people even donated dog food. “If the pantry can’t use it, we’ll give it to the Monroe Animal Shelter,” she said.
