MONROE, CT — The Monroe Rotary Club’s annual Service Above Self Golf Tournament was played under a clear blue sky Thursday afternoon, as 89 golfers teed off on the greens of the Chris Bargas Club at Whitney Farms.
“I think we have more sponsors than in recent years,” said Rotary Club President Ken Kellogg. “We’re on track to exceed our budget for what we want to raise.”
The golf tournament, which also raises money through raffles of gift baskets full of items donated by local businesses, supports community causes.

The Rotary Club of Monroe awards scholarships to high school students, recognizes students of the month, and supports Monroe’s Social Services.
“We’ve supported efforts to make improvements at the senior center, the animal shelter and the new EMS building,” Kellogg said, “and a lot of improvements at Wolfe Park.”
Among the enhancements to the park is the Rock Garden by the Wolfe’s Den Playground entrance, where club volunteers recently installed a Peace Pole.
The Rotary Club also donates all of the books for Monroe Read Aloud Day at the town’s public schools.
Members will conduct a hygiene products drive for the Monroe Food Pantry in October. It’s called Let’s Get Personal. Town Rotarians have also supported Project Warmth, which helps struggling Monroe families to pay their utilities costs.
“We’ve sponsored kids at the town’s Summer Fun Days Camp and the YMCA’s camp,” Kellogg said.
Though the Rotary Club has a small committee, Kellogg praised the hard work of all its members for making Thursday’s tournament happen.
“Everyone pitched in,” he said. “It shows with the number of golfers and sponsors. The weather is cooperating and this is our highest golfer attendance in recent memory, so we’re on target to have a great tournament.”
