Monroe Police Reports: Testo’s owner disrupts cooking oil thieves

MONROE, CT — The owner of Testo’s Restaurant, 505 Main St., reported the attempted theft of cooking oil from a container in the rear parking lot of the business early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 7:35 a.m., he told police he saw three men attempting to pump cooking oil out of the container without permission.

When they were discovered, police said the suspects jumped into a white work van with Pennsylvania plates, which drove off, heading south on Route 25, before turning onto Route 59 toward Easton.

The restaurant owner told officers he did not know if they completed the theft or if he had foiled their attempt.

The container has a specialized lock, which police said was cut. The cooking oil container is owned and operated by Buffalo Biodiesel, which is based in Tonawanda Town, N.Y.

The incident is under investigation.

A fraudulent transaction

A 61-year-old Monroe man reported a fraudulent online transfer of $190,000 from his M&T Bank account to a Goldman Sachs account on April 1.

He contacted M&T Bank’s fraud department, which is working on the matter and was able to block additional attempts at money transfers.

The Monroe Police Detective Division is investigating the case.

Stolen veneer stones

A 37-year-old Elm Street man reported the theft of $500 worth of veneer stones Wednesday. Police said he bought a pallet of the stones Tuesday for a plan to reconstruct his mailbox, started the work, then left the stones near the end of his driveway overnight.

When he left for work Wednesday morning nothing appeared out of the ordinary, but when he returned at 4:15 p.m., he noticed the pallet had been tampered with and the veneer stones were missing, police said.

Officers performed a neighborhood canvas to see if anyone noticed anything suspicious.
