MONROE, CT — Police recently released the results of unannounced inspections of town businesses to ensure compliance with laws against selling tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to minors. Of a total of 15 inspections on May 5, one violation was found.

An offending clerk at Grassy Plains Smoke Shop, 838 Main St., was issued a $300 infraction after being found noncompliant with Connecticut General Statutes Section 53-344: Sale of tobacco to a person under 21 or C.G.S 53-344(b); Sale of an e-cigarette to a person under 21, according to police.

Tobacco retailers are licensed by the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services and noncompliant inspection results are referred to the DRS for possible administrative action.

Officers conducted the unannounced inspections under the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services’ Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program.

Connecticut state law prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes and/or tobacco products to customers under 21 years of age. Retailers are required to inspect the photo ID of anyone who appears under the age of 30, before selling these products to them.
