Monroe Police: Driver was talking on cellphone before causing 5-vehicle-crash

MONROE, CT — Three drivers were taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center following a five-vehicle-crash on Main Street Wednesday night, which closed the northbound lane as police and medical providers tended to the drivers. Traffic was diverted down Spring Hill Road to Cutlers Farm Road.

Just after 7 p.m., police said a 43-year-old Trumbull man heading north on Route 25 in his 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee failed to stop in time, before crashing into the back of a 2009 Chrysler Town & Country that was waiting at a red light at the intersection with Victoria Drive, along with three other vehicles ahead of it.

The Chrysler was pushed forward from the impact, striking a 2012 Ford Mustang, which was pushed into a 2016 Infinity QX80, that then struck the back of a 2013 Subaru Impreza, according to the report.

The Trumbull man told officers he was talking to his wife on his cellphone — which was not hands-free — just before the crash. But police said he was unable to describe how the accident occurred. He was issued an infraction for following too closely.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated the drivers and the Trumbull man was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Police said the drivers of the Chrysler, a 69-year-old Newtown woman, and the Ford Mustang, a Trumbull man (age not provided), were also hospitalized.

All three had their vehicles towed due to disabling damage.

The driver of the Infinity, a 53-year-old Trumbull man, and of the Subaru, a 36-year-old Newtown woman, were not transported to the hospital and their vehicles did not need to be towed, according to police.
