Monroe Police charge Waterbury man with forgery

MONROE, CT — A 48-year-old Waterbury man turned himself in on a warrant Saturday after allegedly trying to cash a fraudulent check for close to $865 at Union Savings Bank on Nov. 7.

Police said the man presented a check made out to a name that matched his I.D., but the bank manager called the account holder to authorize it as a security precaution, because it was for more than $500. Rather than wait for the money, police said the man left the bank.

Detectives investigated the matter, developed a suspect and applied for the arrest warrant.

The man was charged with second-degree forgery and criminal attempt at second-degree forgery. He was released on $1,000 bond for a May 5 court date.

A compromised DraftKings account

A Monroe man told police someone hacked into his DraftKings account and made 114 fraudulent transactions totaling $14,200, which was withdrawn from his Newtown Savings Bank account, according to a complaint made on April 21.

Police said the fraudulent activity dated back to February of 2025. The case is being investigated by the Monroe Police Detective Division.

DraftKings is a popular sports betting site.

Two hospitalized following crash

A two-vehicle-crash in front of the Masuk High School’s driveway on Monroe Turnpike sent both drivers to Bridgeport Hospital for evaluation of injuries April 24.

Police said a 46-year-old Monroe woman attempted to turn left out of the driveway when her 2019 Nissan Rogue struck the passenger side of 2015 Volkswagen Jetta traveling north, making it veer off the right side of the road, where it struck a tree.

The Jetta was driven by a 17-year-old Monroe male.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated both drivers at the scene and took them to the hospital.

An eye witness and both drivers’ account of what happened matched, police said of the accident which occurred around 7:20 a.m.

The woman was issued a ticket for making an unsafe turn from a parking lot.

The Volkswagen Jetta was towed due to disabling damage, police said.
