Monroe Police: Caller posing as regional director scams Walgreens

MONROE, CT — An assistant manager of the Walgreens pharmacy at 275 Monroe Turnpike received a phone call Wednesday from a man claiming to be the chain’s regional director, who told him a female manager he knew at another store needed funds to cover a check that bounced.

The caller asked for two payments of $2,100 to be sent to the woman via Western Union. The assistant manager made the transactions. Then the caller asked him to send two $500 Amazon gift cards. That’s when the assistant manager knew it was a scam.

The victim contacted Security Operations and Western Union was able to reimburse the pharmacy for one of the transactions, but the other one was pending, police said.

Police said the Western Union transactions were made to a bank in Mexico. Western Union is conducting an internal in investigation.
