MONROE, CT — A generous Monroe man, Carmine Nuzzi, bought all of the cookies at a Girl Scout’s table outside the polls at Masuk High School during Tuesday’s municipal election, and told her to give the boxes away to people who voted.

Molly Howard, 12, a Juliette Girl Scout and Jockey Hollow STEM Academy student, said Nuzzi bought all of the boxes on the table, as well as the cases of cookies stacked on the floor behind it.

“As soon as he said it I was like, ‘wow,'” Molly said as her eyes widened.

The $800 purchase will benefit the organization’s Cookies for Heroes drive to send cookies to men and women serving in our nation’s armed forces. In addition to the boxes of cookies, the Girl Scouts accepted cash donations in a jar to support the effort.

“He had a little extra money on him,” said David Howard, Molly’s father, “so he donated it to the troops.”

David and Elle Howard helped their daughter that morning. Elle said any leftover boxes of cookies would be donated to the Monroe Food Pantry.

“A few people said they haven’t had a box of Girl Scout cookies in years,” Elle said.

William and Georgiann McKiernan were surprised at the offer of free Girl Scout cookies as they walked by the table after voting.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Georgiann said.

“Wow, that was nice of them,” Anne Marie Maini said of receiving her free box of cookies. “That’s amazing, so sweet.”

The McKiernans and Maini were among those insisting on making a cash donation to the cause in exchange for the free cookies. By the end of Molly’s shift, from 8 a.m. until noon, she raised an extra $500 worth of cash donations as a result of Nuzzi’s massive cookie purchase.

“I’ve seen so many smiles,” Molly said. “This fills my heart with joy.”
