MONROE, CT — First Selectman Terry Rooney, a Republican, will square off against his Democratic Party challenger, Leon Ambrosey, in a debate at Jockey Hollow Middle School this Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m.

The debate, to be hosted and moderated by the League of Women Voters, is expected to be one hour.

“I am looking forward to debating my opponent as this is a traditional part of the process,” Rooney said Thursday. “As first selectman, I’ve sat in my office with citizens that represent every background in our Monroe community and answered questions everyday pertaining to all concerns facing Monroe. This is a much needed debate to help our people decide how they want Monroe to move forward.”

Ambrosey, who serves as a member of the Monroe Planning and Zoning Commission, is focused on infrastructure, including town roads and school buildings, which are strained by growing student enrollment.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said of the debate. “The only reason I got involved is because something needs to be done. There is concern over taxes. I don’t want to pay any more taxes than I have to pay, but kicking the can down the road … if we did it 15 years ago, it would probably be half the price of now.”

“Most people know me. I just want to get stuff done,” Ambrosey said. “I don’t want to take any credit for it. If we get everyone together, I have no doubt we can find the right answers — and I believe in transparency.”
