TRUMBULL, CT — Members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will gather on Saturday, Nov. 8, to mark Nero Hawley’s grave with a special bronze plaque.
Nero Hawley was born a slave and earned his freedom by taking his owner’s place to serve in the Continental Army. He survived the infamous, harsh winter of Valley Forge with General George Washington’s troops, and later used his skills to establish his own business.

The public is invited to attend this special grave marking ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery, 1856 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull. Light refreshments will be served afterward at the Trumbull Historical Society.
Those attending are asked to RSVP by Nov. 1 to NeroHawleyDedication@gmail.com and let DAR know if you need transportation or are unable to walk to Riverside Cemetery from the parking area. Guests are asked to park across the street from Old Mill Road and walk up to the cemetery.
Monroe, Let’s Get Personal!
The Rotary Club of Monroe will collect personal hygiene items for the Monroe Food Pantry during its second annual “Monroe, Let’s Get Personal!” drive at Stop & Shop, 470 Monroe Turnpike, this Sunday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Anyone making a donation of personal hygiene items will get a small gift from the Rotary, until supplies last.
Needed items are listed on the poster with this brief.
After Sunday’s event, donations can still be made.
Collection boxes are at Monroe Town Hall, the Senior Center, Edith Wheeler Memorial Library and Union Savings Bank on Monroe Turnpike.
Breast Cancer Awareness Walk
A breast cancer awareness walk will be held on the trails of Wolfe Park this Sunday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. The event is sponsored by Shak’s Boxing and Fitness.
Participants will walk the trails and do a bootcamp workout. Shak’s Boxing and Fitness T-shirts will be sold with a portion of the proceeds going to a breast cancer foundation.

Troop 26 Tag Sale
Scouting America Monroe Troop 26 will have a tag sale fundraiser in the parking lot of the former Rite-Aid at the corner of Routes 25 and 59 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8.
Items to be sold include household décor, art, kitchen items, garden tools, antiques, toys and games, holiday décor, jewelry and more.
UMCM Blood Drive
The United Methodist Church of Monroe is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a Halloween Blood Drive from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30.

UMCM Paper Shredding, Electronics recycling fundraiser
The United Methodist Church of Monroe will host its annual Paper Shredding and Electronics Recycling fundraiser at 435 Main St. in Monroe, at the corner of Routes 25 and 59, on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. until noon — rain or shine.
Paper shredding is $10 for the standard archive box (15″ x 12″ x 10″) and the price increases by $5 according to container size.
Electronics recycling includes $10 per cellphone, hard drive and tablet and $20 per computer and laptop.
The church is partnering with Affordable Solutions LLC for the one-stop, confidential, convenient document and data destruction event.
The event will benefit missions near and far. Individuals and businesses are welcome. No need to exit your vehicle, just pull up, pop open your trunk and the volunteers will take care of the rest.
