MONROE, CT — Monroe’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) assists first responders during natural disasters, staffs emergency shelters, helps with distribution of supplies, assists with the operation vaccination clinics amid pandemics, and helps out during major events such as the Memorial Day Parade.
CERT consists of volunteers dedicated to helping their community. On Thursday, Nov. 21, a new group of members completed basic training to join the team, according to CERT Director David York.
“I’m impressed that 13 townspeople have been willing to go through the basic CERT training and that six of our local certified trainers worked with these people over parts of two weekends,” York said.
“I am pleased that we have a team that will willingly help out neighbors without judgement, both residents within the community, and possibly with a statewide need,” he said.
On Nov. 21, the new CERT members took their oath at the Monroe Senior Center and were congratulated by First Selectman Terry Rooney and CERT Board members. They were also given their backpacks with basic emergency gear.
“Volunteerism like this to help our community when needed is a clear example of why Monroe is a great place to live,” said Rick Smith, a CERT member.
