MONROE, CT — Host Masuk High had a fifth-place finish in the South-West Conference Championships on Friday. The Panthers were led by a pair of first-place event finishes and several strong swims throughout the meet. Pomperaug of Southbury was first with a score of 520. Masuk placed with 186.
Masuk made a statement at the start of the meet, jumping out in front of the rest of the conference with a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay. The A relay team for this event consisted of Jack McHugh, Carter Adragna, Brendan Kirberger and Will Hardy, finishing with a time of 1:43:28.
Adragna won the 100 breaststroke race in 1:02.16 and took second in the 50 free in 21.88. Kirberger took second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.36 and came in third in the 50 with a time of 23.17. Mason Eannotti gave Masuk another top-five finish with a fifth-place outcome in the 200 individual medley race, clocking in at 2:09.79.

The 200 free relay of McHugh, Will Hardy, Julian and Eannotti was fifth in 1:36.91. Masuk had a trio among the top 10 in the 100 backstroke race. Eannotti placed third in 56.62, Hardy came in fifth in 57.39 and McHugh was sixth in 57.80.
McHugh was ninth in the 100 free in 52.77. Aiden Cammarano was ninth in the 100 breaststroke event in 1:08.24. He won the second heat and cut about four seconds off his time.
In the backstroke Bobby Regan from Pomperaug beat the pool record with a first-place time of 51:61. Thomas Rodriguez from Masuk placed first in the first heat of the backstroke, cutting six seconds off his time with a final time of 1:08:49 and a 19th place finish.
The meet ended with an exciting and heart pumping 400 yard freestyle relay. Masuk’s A relay team consisted of Kirberger, Adragna, Eannotti and Hardy and came in second in 3:25:71. Kirberger broke the team record in this relay with a 100 yard split time of 47:88.
Masuk finished fourth out of nine teams in the conference overall when including the points received from regular season dual meets.
Masuk swimmers have made Class M State Trails and will compete next Saturday, March 15.
