MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High’s softball team, the No. 3 seed in the South-West Conference Tournament, defeated No. 6 Pomperaug 13-1 in the quarterfinals at Masuk on Friday.
Masuk made it a five-inning, mercy-rule win behind a barrage of long balls. After Pomperaug jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Panthers answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the first inning.
Josie Lieto, Ciena Perpetuo and Grace Ely all homered. Lieto drove in three runs and Ely and Peyton Webb (who walked and doubled) both knocked in two. Gianna Moretti had two singles.
Mary Saunders recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed just one hit and no earned runs in the five innings.
Masuk will take on No. 2 Brookfield in the semifinals on Tuesday, May 26, at 5 p.m. The teams will meet a neutral site — either Newtown or Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.
