Masuk softball pitcher throws no hitter setting up race for first

Julia Bacoulis threw a no-hitter in Sunday's win.

MONROE, CT — Masuk High softball pitcher Julia Bacoulis threw a no-hitter in the Panthers’ 7-1 win over Newtown on Sunday. The game was a makeup of a May 8 contest that was scoreless into the fifth inning when lightning halted play and caused the re-start.

The outcome leaves Masuk, Newtown and Brookfield all battling for the top spot in the South-West Conference and, depending on results of the final regular season games this week, it appears we could be headed for a coin toss to determine the placement of these three teams.

Newtown beat Brookfield and Brookfield defeated Masuk. All three schools have won each of their other conference games.

In the Sunday win things were scoreless into the fourth inning. Bacoulis helped her own cause with a solo home run to right field for a 1-0 Panther lead.

Bacoulis struck out 15 batters and the lone run she allowed was unearned, resulting from a walk and error.

The Panthers added to their lead when Grace Ely doubled, Madison Aguire singled and an error scored a run.

In the fifth, Masuk plated four runs behind a combination of hits, walks and errors. Aubrey Zvovushe-Ramos, Sofia Lieto, Bacoulis, Ely and Alyssa Castillo all contributed to the offense in the frame. Ava Moretti had an RBI double in the sixth.

“It’s nice to get the win, especially against a good, competitive SWC team,” Masuk Coach Leigh Barone said.

Masuk was coming off wins in which they scored double digits seven straight times, while winning by at least 10 runs in six of those games.

The SWC quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday, May 24.
