Masuk girls volleyball team strives to perform at highest level

The Masuk girls volleyball captains are Abigail Urkawich and Lily Yerrington.

MONROE, CT — Masuk High girls volleyball Coach Carol Ortiz has high expectations for her team — not limited to wins and losses, but to the overall picture.

Our goal for the season is to consistently perform at our highest level in practice, in games and in the classroom,” Ortiz said. “We have a great group of athletes this year and I am looking forward to watching their on-court chemistry grow. A packed game schedule will be putting their physical and mental endurance to the test, but they are ready for the challenge.”

A strength of the team is its leadership and experience. “They are a well-balanced team,” the coach added.

Senior captains are outside hitter Abigail Urkawich and middle hitter Lily Yerrington.

Other key team members include junior setter Mia Tyler, junior outside hitter Addison Scott, senior libero Mary-Kate Boyle and junior opposite side hitter Jacqueline Silkman.

The regular season starts Tuesday, Sept. 2, when Kolbe Cathedral visits at 7 p.m. Among the schedule highlights are the Saturday, Sept. 6, Connecticut Volleyball Invitational at the Volleyball Center in Woodbridge beginning at 8 a.m.; an Oct. 9 home match with South-West Conference champ Joel Barlow at 7; and an Oct. 16 visit to SWC runner-up Newtown at 5:30.
