Masuk girls volleyball aces New Fairfield, outlasts New Milford

The Masuk girls volleyball team picked up a couple of important SWC wins against New Fairfield and New Milford this week.   

Masuk travelled to New Fairfield on Tuesday and handed the host Rebels a 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-15) defeat. Masuk dominated the service line with 18 aces. Seniors Jenna Dattilo and Rose Kealey, along with junior Sammy Sullivan, each dealt out four aces.

Senior Lucy Pagel (3), sophomore Laura Micu (2), and junior Tolu Olatinwo (1) also came up big in the service game. Micu and Olatinwo led the attack with 5 and 4 kills respectively. Pagel, Sullivan and junior Hannah Fagan had 2 kills apiece. Kealey continued to spread the ball to her teammates, contributing 15 assists.

In a home match on Wednesday, the Panthers found a tough opponent in New Milford.  The teams traded wins in the first four sets before Masuk settled down to take the fifth set and the match 3-2 (25-19, 15-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-7).

Masuk received big offensive performances from Micu (13 kills), sophomore Sophie Gustinis (7), Sullivan (6) and Olatinwo (5). Lucy Pagel (3), junior Emma Kilcullen (2) and Fagan (1).

Setter Rose Kealey led the team with 34 assists while Fagan, Micu and junior Alexis Mitrakis each set a teammate up for a kill. Defensively, the Panthers were led by Oltinwo’s 3 blocks and Sullivan (11 digs), Pagel (8) and senior libero Carly Snyder (8) made New Milford earn every point.

Masuk continued its strong play on the service line with seven players contributing at least one ace.

With the two wins the Panthers improved to 6-3 (4-1 in the SWC).

The Panthers were coming off a 3-0 (25-15, 25-5, 25-21) setback at home against Newtown on Sept. 23. Masuk stats from that match are as follows:

Laura Micu – 6 kills, 1 ace, 7 serve receives

Sammy Sullivan – 1 kill, 1 ace, 1 dig, 13 serve receives

Jenna Datillo – 2 aces, 2 serve receives

Lucy Pagel – 1 dig, 6 serve receives

Lila Pagel – 1 kill, 1 ace, 1 serve receive

Emma Kilcullen – 1 kill, 1 dig, 2 serve receives

Hannah Fagen – 1 dig, 1 serve receive

Alexis Mitrakis – 1 ace, 1 serve receive

Masuk will return to the court this Friday when the Panthers visit Kolbe Cathedral at 6:15 p.m.
