MONROE, CT — Hopes and expectations are high for Masuk High’s girls soccer team this fall.
“Win the SWC for sure — that’s our goal,” said Coach Katy Kreiner, whose team blanked Bethel 6-0 in the season opener on Sept. 4 before falling 1-0 to Newtown in another home game on Sept. 9.
With nine seniors in the fold and plenty of experience throughout the lineup the Panthers have reason for confidence. They are led by senior captains Ella McGee, who scored a hat-trick in the Bethel game, Amelia Stephens and Kara Leandres, the team’s starting goalkeeper.
McGee (Northeastern University) and Stephens (William & Mary) will both play Division I college soccer next year.
In addition to McGee and Stephens, freshman Bella Bost, sophomore “Tiny” Fabryk and junior Semia Zylick help bolster the attack.
“We have a very strong offense,” said Kreiner, adding that this is a strong technical skill team.
Teams that may stand in the way, in addition to Newtown, include defending South-West Conference Champion Brookfield and runner-up Notre Dame Prep of Fairfield.
Masuk looks to get back into the win column when it hosts Weston Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m.
