MONROE, CT — Masuk High’s field hockey team is set to tangle with tough South-West Conference foes and be in the mix of title contenders.

“All the returning girls have improved and the incoming girls have experience,” Coach Laura Lageman said. “We have a strong defensive team and offensive team, so we are right where we need to be.”

“Last year was a building year — this year is a year to prove we are a competitive team. As with any team, our goal is the championship. Dream big, Play hard, reach goals,” the coach added.

The Panthers have plenty of depth, fielding junior varsity and varsity squads.

“We have 24 girls and we are looking strong,” Lageman said.

Captains are forward Abby Troesser and midfielder Emma Troesser, forward Molly Kinahan and jack of all trades player Eve Fernandez.

Sophomore forward Gigi Moretti and freshmen defenders Kenny Sawyer and Georgia DaPonte will bring strong defensive skills to the starting lineup.

Masuk begins the season Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Bethel at 4 p.m. The first home game is set for Saturday, Sept. 13, against Lakeview at 1 p.m. Among the games to watch are the last two on the regular slate as the Panthers host defending SWC champ Newtown Oct. 13 and SWC runner-up New Milford two days later, both at 5 p.m.
