Masuk boys volleyball team has won 9 of 11 matches

Masuk High’s boys volleyball team has a record of 9-2 having lost only to defending South-West Conference Champion Joel Barlow, which beat Masuk in last year’s pinnacle competition, as well as Cheshire, a nonconference foe the Panthers defeated in another meeting this campaign.

The Panthers are coming off a 3-0 (25-21,25-23,25-19) win over host Pomperaug on Wednesday. Michael Majerski had 20 kills and 6 digs; Nathan Kurkoski had 35 assists, 2 aces, and 11 digs; and Tyler Barringer recorded 14 kills and 6 digs.

Two days earlier came a 3-1 (25-12, 25-14, 22-25, 25-14) home win over Brookfield. Barranger logged 14 kills and 4 digs; Nathan Kurkoski registered 37 assists, 8 aces and 8 digs; and Majerski compiled 14 kills and eight digs.

Masuk was coming off its only losses, April 22 at Barlow and April 24 at home against Cheshire. The Barlow score was 3-1 (26-24,25-27,23-25,20-25); player stats not available.

The loss to Cheshire was a four-setter, 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 22-25, 23-25). Majersky had 22 kills, 11 digs and 3 blocks; Kurkoski racked up 40 assists, 4 kills and 12 digs; and Mathias Aoaeh had 10 kills and 3 total blocks.

Recent wins include a 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-21) victory over Stamford on April 14. Daniel Ferris had 12 kills, 1 ace and 6 digs; Kurkoski had 28 assists, 3 aces and 4 digs; and Andrew Oleyar added 8 digs and 1 ace.

On April 16 the Panthers beat Brookfield 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-20). Aoaeh had 10 kills and 4 total blocks; Kurkoski had 24 assists, 3 digs and 5 aces; and Nick Adams had 5 digs and 2 aces.

In their first meeting with Cheshire on April 17, the Panthers prevailed 3-2 (14-25, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12); player stats are not available.

Masuk will get a chance at redemption against Barlow. After visiting Kolbe Cathedral Friday, May 2, at 6 p.m. the Panthers will host Barlow Monday, May 5, also at 6.
