Masuk boys’ hockey opens season with 8-2 rout of Shepaug

MONROE, CT — Masuk boys’ hockey came out on all cylinders offensively, scoring eight goals in its season opener, an 8-2 victory over Shepaug co-op Wednesday.

Drew Scalia led the charge for the Panthers, scoring four goals. AJ Michetti had two goals and Austin Braiewa and Nick Kondub scored one goal a piece.

Masuk’s next two games will be on the road to close out December before the Panthers have a rematch with the Shepaug co-op in their home opener, Wednesday, Jan. 5, at The Rinks at Shelton at 7 p.m.

The Panthers captains are senior Jack Cirillo and junior Drew Scalia, who was last season’s leading point-getter on the team with 25.

Other players the Panthers will look to for scoring this season are junior AJ Michetti, sophomore Nick Kondub, and juniors Kye Suftkin and Austin Braiewa, Coach Andy Townsend said.

The defense is led by Cirillo, senior Justin Aleman and junior Colin Deering. Sophomores Connor Ewald and James Cybart will also be relied on.

Senior goaltender Tory Beck returns after starting every game last season. Sophomore Andy Guerrera will see some game time in net this year.
