Masuk boys golf team tees off on the courses

MONROE, CT — Despite losing four team members to graduation last year, the Masuk High’s boys golf team is striving to improve on last season’s showing, Coach Kris Overcash said.

“The goal will be to qualify for SWC tournament and make a strong showing,” Overcash said. “That goes for the state tournament as well. Last year, we finished 11th in our division and the goal is to break into the top 10.”

The captain is senior Andrew Picci. The team has four solid players, one from each grade, that includes Picci, junior Jack Irving, sophomore Charlie Richer and freshman Johnny Angelopoulos.
Masuk will also lean on efforts from seniors Mike Daly and John Telep, junior Tommy DaPonte and sophomore Anthony Palma.

Tough competition on the schedule includes Pomperaug and Newtown, both of which Masuk will visit this fall.

“I am really excited to see how the season plays out. It is a young team as we graduated four seniors last year. Andrew has done a great job picking up the torch and motivating the guys to play hard,” Overcash said.

Golf season tees off earlier than the other fall sports. Masuk started off the season with a tough loss to Bethel in its opener on Aug. 20, but has since bounced back with wins over Weston and Bunnell, while posting great qualifying scores for states.

“The team posted its best score under my watch as coach at our home course, Chris Bargas Golf Club at Whitney Farms,” Overcash said of an Aug 25 win over Bunnell. “They scored +14 (154). Andrew and Jack posted 38 and Charlie and Johnny posted 39.”
