Masuk boys basketball beaten on half-court buzzer beater

Mitch DeBernardo and the Panthers will look to bounce back in the state playoffs following a heart-breaking SWC tourney defeat.

WESTON, CT — What a wild turn of events at the end of the Masuk-Weston South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals boys basketball game on Wednesday night.

Right after Masuk’s Mitch DeBernardo hit a clutch 3-pointer from the right elbow to tie the score in the waning seconds, host Weston ended things in ultra-dramatic fashion when Kollen Kyle took an end line inbound pass and launched a buzzer-beater from beyond half court. The ball banked in for 52-49 Weston stunner.

The shot made ESPN’s Top 10 highlights. Small consolation given the outcome, but so too did DeBernardo’s 3-pointer.

It was a heartbreaker for No. 6 Masuk, which came close to avenging a regular-season loss to the No. 3 seed.

DeBernardo finished with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. Alex Simoulidis had 11 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Oliver Irving registered seven points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. Stephen Sentementes logged four points, four assists, four rebounds and a trio of steals. Saijon Gavin added four points, nine rebounds and two assists. Jayden Cassese tacked on four points, two rebounds and a steal.

Masuk will turn its attention to the Division III State Tournament. The Panthers are the No. 8 seed with a regular season record of 13-7.
