Masuk announces Emily Woznick as new head softball coach

Emily Woznick, who has been an assistant coach for Masuk's softball team for three years, will now be the head coach of the storied program.

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High School announced the appointment of Emily Woznick as the new head coach of its storied softball program.

Woznick, a social studies teacher at Masuk, has been a member of the softball coaching staff for the past three seasons, contributing to the continued success of one of the most accomplished high school softball programs in the state. Masuk Softball has captured seven straight CIAC State Championships, with Woznick serving on staff for the most recent three titles.

“Masuk Softball is a program built on a legacy of excellence, pride and community,” Woznick said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to lead a group of high-level athletes who work hard, support one another and take pride in representing our school. My focus is always to be players’ coach first by supporting, motivating and empowering each athlete, both on and off the field, to uphold the competitive spirit that has defined Masuk Softball.”

Woznick will follow the footsteps of longtime coach, Leigh Barone, who compiled a career record of 233-27. Barone announced her retirement in September.

According to a press release from Athletic Director Brian Hourigan, during the interview process, Woznick impressed the hiring committee with a student-athlete-centered coaching philosophy emphasizing positive and proactive communication, player growth, leadership development and a team-first culture.

She demonstrated deep knowledge of the game and a clear vision for supporting players at all stages of their softball journey, including those who train and compete year-round, the release said.

Emily Woznick has also coached travel softball for the Rhode Island Thunder Gold and Newtown Thunder programs.

“We are excited for Emily to take the lead of our softball program,” Hourigan said. “Emily is an outstanding teacher and coach who believes that athletics are an extension of the classroom.”

“She impressed our committee with her knowledge of the game, her passion for helping student-athletes reach their full potential, and her strong communication skills,” Hourigan continued. “She embodies the core values of our athletic department — integrity, community and excellence — and we are confident she will continue to lead our program with the highest standards.”

Woznick brings a strong combination of playing and coaching experience to the position. A standout collegiate athlete at Salve Regina University and Springfield College, she has served in coaching roles at both the high school and elite travel levels, including with the Rhode Island Thunder Gold and Newtown Thunder programs.

Her background has equipped her with an advanced understanding of the strategic, technical and developmental aspects of softball, both in and out of season.
