MONROE, Conn. — Jockey Hollow Middle School’s eighth grade girls basketball team won the Fairfield County Middle School Championship on Feb. 12 with a 48-25 win over Hillcrest Middle School in the Finals. This is Jockey Hollow’s first championship since the 2022-2023 season (players from that team are now seniors).

“This year’s Jockey Hollow 8th grade team had a special dynamic,” Coach Rob Troesser said. “Having only two losses on the entire season — both by one point, the girls handled the success in stride, always focused on the goal of the season: a league championship. This has truly been one of my favorite groups to coach in all my years at Jockey Hollow.”

Among the Lions’ scorers, Emma Pryor had 14 points, Sarah Beckett added 12, Maddie Giraldo, who played with a broken finger on her right hand, had 6, Alana Laurent 5, Gabby Ely 4 and Molly Boyle and Allie Leoniuk scored 2 points each.

On the defensive end, Rosie Gonzalez had key steals in a 21 point second quarter, which helped put the girls ahead by a comfortable margin.
