Open Letter to First Selectman Terry Rooney and the Monroe Town Council,
With the recent rise in commercial development in town, particularly on Route 111, the residents deserve to know the specific details related to tax deferments or abatement agreements relative to each of the new businesses opened within the past five years.
We’d like to know what long term tax discounts have been promised to these businesses — including the yet to open O’Reilly Auto Parts store.

This is a great question. I have always promoted tailing our abatements so that they decrease over the time of the abatement, but the recommendations tend to still be for the max abatement at this point. I will note that one part I did not understand prior to my time on counsel is that the abatement is only applied to the INCREASED assessment on the property from the current assessment. So, they still pay 100% taxes on the assessment prior to the application and get a discount on the increase in assessed value from the improvements they then make to the property.
