EDC to postpone Monroe Business Appreciation Day due to coronavirus concerns

A bouquet of green balloons were going to be displayed at businesses participating in Monroe Business Appreciation Day.

MONROE — Local merchants were gearing up for Monroe Business Appreciation Day this Saturday, but now that the town’s schools are closed and officials are encouraging social distancing to slow the spread of the coronavirus, the event will be rescheduled.

Monroe Economic Development Chairman Ray Giovanni said members have been calling businesses all day to break the news.

“Monroe businesses will remain open as usual, including March 14, and we encourage you to support them during this time,” the EDC said in a press release. “In response from our community, the public and local businesses; the Economic Development Commission is working to reschedule the Monroe Business Appreciation Day to a later date.”

“We believe rescheduling to a later day will provide a more positive impact for our businesses and provide the necessary foot traffic to make our event even more successful,” the statement read. “Continue to #appreciatemonroe and stay tuned for a new date to be announced on our website and social media accounts.”
