Driver allegedly asks off duty cop: ‘Do you want to get shot in the head?

A Bridgeport man allegedly threatened an off duty Monroe police officer at a traffic light at the intersection of Monroe Turnpike and Century Plaza Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the officer stopped behind another vehicle at a traffic light in the north bound lane of Route 111 at Cross Hill Road around 12:45 p.m. Then the light turned green and another driver passed both vehicles on the left side, before continuing straight toward oncoming traffic in the south lane, according to the report.

The officer pulled alongside the vehicle at a red light at the Century Plaza intersection and noticed the driver was leaning against the steering wheel and did not have his hands on the wheel, police said.

When the officer rolled down his window and asked the man if he was okay, police said the driver replied, “do you want to get shot in the head?”

The officer identified himself as a police officer and called for marked units to respond. Capt. Keith White said officers had the driver pull into the shopping center parking lot, before taking him into custody for the alleged threat.

White said the man did not have a gun on him nor inside his vehicle.

Shawn Laiccia, 39, of Success Village in Bridgeport, was charged with second-degree breach of peace and second-degree threatening. He was being held on $500 bond for an Oct. 10 court date.

Honda Pilot crashes into a tree

A woman told officers she fell asleep at the wheel of her Honda Pilot before clipping a Kia Sportage while heading north on Monroe Turnpike, veering off the road and hitting a tree Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Brittany Provenzano, 32, of Williamsburg Drive in Monroe, was issued an infraction for distracted driving other than a cellphone.

Police said she was treated at the scene by Monroe Emergency Medical Service personnel and did not have to be taken to a hospital for injuries.

The other driver was not hurt and his vehicle had minor damage, according to police.

Police said the Honda Pilot had front end damage and its air bag deployed on impact. The Honda was towed from the scene.

The accident occurred around 1 p.m., near the Century Plaza intersection.
