The Plunge is coming back to Great Hollow Lake on April 13. The annual fundraiser for Special Olympics Connecticut is organized by the Monroe Police Department.

MONROE, CT — The Penguin Plunge, an annual fundraiser organized by the Monroe Police Department to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut’s athletes, will be held at Great Hollow Lake this Saturday, April 13.

Registration will be at 11 a.m. and the Plunge will be at 1 p.m. To register, click here.

Jam at the Dam

The highly anticipated Jam At The Dam Country Music Festival is coming back to Z-Topia, 1545 Monroe Turnpike, on Friday, July 26, and Saturday, July 27.

Attendees can look forward to a family friendly event with a variety of food trucks offering delectable treats and local vendor tents for a unique shopping experience.

Jam at the Dam will feature performances from outstanding of artists in a vibrant atmosphere.

Lions Scholarship Fund

The Monroe Lions Club will “shake the can” for donations towards its Scholarship Fund outside Glen Ro Spirit Shoppe, 487 Monroe Turnpike, Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, from 3 to 6 p.m.

The scholarships are awarded to graduating Masuk High School seniors pursuing further education.

Those who cannot stop by, but want to help, can call Lion President Frank Bent at 203-650-5632 to donate.

Club Spring Blood Drive

The Monroe Lions Club is sponsoring a spring blood drive with the American Red Cross at Monroe Congregational Church, 34 Church Street, on Wednesday, May 1, from 8:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Poets of the Prairie

Poets of the Prairie, a concert combining songs, stories and vintage guitars to examine the cultural impact of popular 20th Century folksingers, songwriters and recording artists from the Great Plains of North America, will be held at Edith Wheeler Memorial Library on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m.

Featured singers include Americans Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Phil Ochs, Goebel Reeves, Jimmy Webb and Jimmie Davis, as well as Canadians Buffy Sainte-Marie, Ian Tyson, Gordon Lightfoot and others.

In addition to singing vintage songs, Ken Lelen, who has performed over 2,000 concerts for adults and seniors over the past 25 years, will play vintage acoustic guitars for an authentic, back-in-the-day sound. The guitars were made by Gibson, Martin, Oscar Schmidt, Regal, Larson, Weymann and other U.S. firms.

A reception will follow the concert, which is sponsored by the Friends of Edith Wheeler Memorial Library. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For information, call the Reference Desk at 203-452-2852.

MASBC Golf fundraiser

The Masuk All Sports Booster Club is hosting its annual golf tournament fundraiser at Whitney Farms Golf Course on Wednesday, June 19. Click here to sponsor, donate and play.

The Booster Club’s most recent contribution to Masuk athletics were new indoor batting cages in the Auxiliary gym for its baseball and softball teams. It has also helped Monroe Little League players.

UMC Paper Shredding Fundraiser

The United Methodist Church of Monroe is hosting a Paper Shredding Fundraiser (rain or shine) from 9 a.m. until noon at Rite Aid, 435 Main Street, Monroe (corner of Route 25 and Route 59) on Saturday, May 4.

The event will benefit missions near and far. Individuals and businesses are welcome. No need to exit your vehicle, just pull up, pop open your trunk and church volunteers will take care of the rest.

It costs $10 for a standard archive box (15”x12”x10”) and prices increase by $5 according to container size. Payment can be in cash, checks payable to UMC Monroe with “Paper Shredding” in the memo line, or credit/debit.

The church is working with PROSHRED Security at the event.
