Crash hospitalizes Monroe teen, victim loses over $4,000 to Facebook Marketplace scam

MONROE, CT — A male Monroe passenger, 17, was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for treatment of injuries after a gray 2007 Mazda 3 crashed into a utility pole on Monroe Turnpike, just south of Crown View Drive on April 26.

The driver, an 18-year-old Monroe man, reportedly told officers he was heading south on Route 111 around 10:20 p.m., when he did not realize his vehicle was close to the curb, struck it and lost control of the Mazda, going off the right side of the road and hitting the pole.

He was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane and his Mazda, which sustained heavy front-end damage, had to be towed, according to police.

Monroe Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated the driver and his three passengers at the scene, before taking the 17-year-old to the hospital.

Facebook Marketplace scam

A Spring Hill Road man told police he exchanged private texts with someone selling a 20-foot metal shipping container on Facebook Marketplace, before paying $4,041 for it via Zelle. The container was delivered, but the delivery driver later returned to the resident’s home to take it back, according to the police complaint filed on April 26.

The company claimed the container was stolen, because it was paid for with a fraudulent credit card, police said. The victim argued that he paid via Zelle, not with a credit card, and insisted there was a mistake.

Police said the victim later learned the unknown person he bought the container from had used a stolen credit card to purchase it.

The company loaded its container back up and did not suffer any loss, but the victim is out $4,041, police said, adding the incident is under investigation by the Monroe Police Detective Division.
