Superintendent Dr. Jack Zamary honored the Monroe Rotary Club with the Exemplary People Award for its consistent support of Monroe public schools during the Board of Education meeting on Monday.
Rotary Club President Katie Bailey and secretary Steve Vavrek, a former Monroe first selectman, accepted the award on behalf of the nonprofit community organization.
Among its efforts, Zamary praised the Rotary for the scholarships it awards students and its Youth Exchange program, which gives students from other countries an opportunity to attend Monroe’s schools.
Soctober
Vavrek took the opportunity to pitch Soctober, the Monroe Rotary Club’s collection drive to provide warm socks for the people helped by the Homes for the Brave, the Bridgeport Rescue Mission and The Center for Family Justice.
Monroe Social, 494 Main St. and Last Drop Cafe, 435 Main St., will accept donations of socks from patrons from Oct. 13 to 19. Patrons who donate a pair of socks and buy one drink with get a second drink free.
The Monroe Rotary will donate a pair of socks as a match for every pair collected.
Teacher of the Year visits the BOE
Jockey Hollow Middle School social studies teacher Douglas DelVecchio, the 2020 Teacher of the Year for Monroe public schools, was recognized by the Board of Education at its meeting Monday.
“He has an amazing presence that everyone values,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jack Zamary said. “He’s interested in every student as an individual and gives them a sense of belonging.”
Kids Kreation Playground fundraiser
The Monroe Playground Foundation is hosting a pasta dinner fundraiser to support its project to rebuild the Kids Kreation Playground at Wolfe Park.
The event will be held at Monroe Congregational Church’s Rexford House, 34 Church St., this Friday, from 5 to 8 p.m.
To preregister, click on this link to buy tickets. Pasta dinners are $10 per person or $40 per family. Kids younger than five eat for free. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $12 a person or $45 a family.
Dinner includes a salad, pasta, meatballs and bread. Each meal is served with refreshments, coffee, tea and dessert.

Gala takes on domestic violence
Many Faces of Change, a Domestic Violence Awareness Gala benefitting The Center for Family Justice, will be held at Sunset at Boca, 10 East Main St. in Bridgeport, on Monday, Oct. 21.
The event begins at 6 p.m. and will feature guest speaker, mixed martial artist Rebecca “Bec” Rawlings.
Tickets cost $100 and can be obtained by called the Bridgeport Police Training Academy at 203-576-8332. The event includes an open bar.
The gala is being hosted by Bridgeport Police Training Academy Recruit Class No. 41.
