Community News: A toy drive, Christmas tree pick ups, recycling

Holiday Toy Drive

The Monroe Police Department is collecting new and unwrapped toys for its annual Holiday Toy Drive benefitting the children of Katie’s Place, an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children in Monroe and surrounding committees.

Donations will be collected from now until Dec. 15.

A collection box is in the lobby of the Monroe Police Department, 7 Fan Hill Road.

Other drop off locations are Masuk High School and Jockey Hollow Middle School.

Friday Family Support Night

The Monroe Playground Foundation is hosting a Friday Family Supper Night featuring tacos from El Coyote, a Monroe restaurant and the event sponsor, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, at Monroe Congregational Church, 34 Church St.

All proceeds will benefit the Kids Kreation Rebuild of the playground at Wolfe Park.

Dinner includes beef tacos, Mexican rice, beans, corn and pepper salad, chips and salsa, refreshments and sweets.

There will also be raffles to win several themed basket prizes. Kids are welcome to come in their pajamas. The event will have a reading corner and coloring content.

Tickets for those who preregister by Dec. 12 cost $10 per person or $40 per family with parents and children. Children younger than five eat for free.

Tickets cost $12 per person at the door and per $45 for family. Children younger than five eat for two dollars.

Christmas tree pickups

The Monroe Highway Department will begin picking up Christmas trees on Monday, Jan. 13, 2020. Residents must have their tree at the curb by 7 a.m. Trees should be free of all accessories and should not be bagged.

The Highway Department will complete the tree pick up on Friday, Jan. 31. It is not necessary to call for an appointment.

Residents also have the option of taking their Christmas tree to the Garder Road Landfill, 211 Garder Road, free of charge on Fridays or Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

2020 Recycling Schedule

Waste motor oil, anti-freeze …

Monroe Public Works released the 2020 schedule for waste motor oil, anti-freeze and vehicle battery recycling.

On the second Saturday of every month, Monroe residents may drop off used motor oil and filters, vehicle batteries and anti-freeze at the Town Garage, 447 Purdy Hill Road, free of charge, from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Proof of residency is required.

The dates are: Jan. 11, Feb. 8, March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12.
