Caller impersonates a police officer. A Monroe woman’s not fooled

MONROE, CT — A Monroe woman received a phone call from a man claiming to be a town police officer, who wanted to talk about identity theft. Then he started asking her for personal information, according to a complaint made on May 15.

The man gave the woman a name and a badge number and Google results showed he was calling from a Monroe Police Department phone number, so she initially trusted him.

Police said she became suspicious when he started asking for personal information, so she suggested they meet at headquarters to discuss the matter further.

This upset the caller, who threatened her with arrest if she did not answer his questions. At this point, she determined it was a scam went to police.

She did not provide any personal information to the caller, who had spoofed the Monroe Police Department’s phone number to mask the number he was calling from, according to the report.

A 29-year-old Trumbull man was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane on May 13, after crashing his 2024 Jeep Compass into a utility pole off Hattertown Road, west of Guinea Road.

The accident occurred around 12:20 p.m., when the man was heading east. He reportedly told officers that, just before hitting the pole, he noticed something sliding off the passenger seat and took his eyes off the road, while reaching over to stop it from falling.
