Bridgeport man turns himself in on a warrant for DUI after one-vehicle-crash

MONROE, Conn. — An 18-year-old Bridgeport man turned himself in on a warrant Monday for a DUI stemming from a one-vehicle-crash into a stonewall in front of a residence on Stanley Road, at the intersection with Hiram Hill Road, on Feb. 16. He had two passengers, 17- and 18-year-old males from Bridgeport.

At approximately 8:06 p.m. on Feb. 16, officers responded to the report of a 2011 Jeep Patriot completely off the roadway and suspended atop the rock wall with severe front end damage, after the driver failed to negotiate the sharp right hand turn onto Stanley Road from Hiram Hill, police said.

The driver and his two passengers were outside of the vehicle when officers arrived, one of the male teenagers was lying in the snow with serious facial wounds, according to police. Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel took him to St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

An 18-year-old male told officers he was the driver. Police detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him and he admitted to drinking tequila, police said. He reportedly said he was coming from Milford and trying to get to Bridgeport.

Field sobriety tests were conducted, but not completed due to possible injuries sustained by the driver. He was examined by EMS and taken to Bridgeport Hospital.

A juvenile passenger told officers he was not injured.

Police obtained a warrant for hospital records, which showed the driver had an elevated blood alcohol content, according to the report. Then police submitted an arrest warrant to court, which was signed, and the driver turned himself in.

The driver was charged with DUI with a child in the car (the 17-years-old), two counts of reckless endangerment (because the juvenile and another 18-year-old passenger were both injured in a DUI crash), and failure to keep right.

He was unable to post his court set $50,000 bond and was taken to court Monday morning.

Gift card scam

A woman who just started a new job at a business on Pepper Street received an early morning email from someone she thought was her boss on Feb. 27.

The person posing as her boss asked her to go to Big Y and buy four Sephora gift cards and add $200 to each one. She complied, according to police, who said she received another email asking her to buy four Xbox gift cards with $200 on each.

She reportedly purchased $1,600 worth of gift cards and was asked to supply card numbers and pin on each one. Police said she did so for five of the cards, before realizing it was a scam and is out $1,000.

Police Lt. Kevin McKellick said this is similar to other types of scams. It if was a real scenario, he said a boss or co-worker would usually want the gift card in hand, rather than asking for the numbers.

Whenever you receive a request for a gift card from someone, McKellick said to verify the message came from them before buying anything.

Crash at Fan Hill and Church Street

Police responded to a two-vehicle-crash at the intersection of Fan Hill Road and Church Street on Feb. 26.

At approximately 7:41 p.m., police said a 39-year-old Monroe woman heading south on Fan Hill in her 2015 Ford Edge failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection and crashed into the right side of a 2015 Honda Odyssey heading east on Church Street.

Monroe EMS personnel evaluated both drivers (including a 50-year-old Monroe woman who drove the Honda) and a total of five juvenile passengers between the two vehicles, but all declined a trip to a hospital, according to police.

The driver of the Ford was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Police said the Ford sustained front end damage, but could be driven away. However, the Honda had damage to the entire right side and had to be towed.
