Blizzard update: Following heavy snowfall, Monroe’s cleanup begins

A street is covered with snow at the height of the storm Sunday night.

MONROE, Conn. —- Monroe and the rest of the region is buried in heavy snow with more still falling, and schools have been canceled Monday, as plowing crews and homeowners dig out of the wintry mess. However, there are no reports of downed trees or power lines and Eversource’s outage map shows “fewer than two” Monroe customers without power this morning.

“This is a very heavy snow, which creates a labor intensive clean-up,” First Selectman Terry Rooney said Monday morning. “DPW has been fighting this fierce accumulation, trying to keep a lane open for emergency travel. As the snow winds down the final clean-up will begin. Only travel if absolutely necessary.”

Police Lt. Kevin McKellick said there are no downed trees, no downed wires, no road closures nor any known power outages.

“Continue to stay off the roads,” he said. “Let public works do their job. Keep your cars out of the road. The cleanup is expected to last all day.”

Monroe Fire Chief Kevin Catalano said two of his fire stations were staffed by volunteers overnight into Monday.

“Fortunately there have been no fire calls as of 10 a.m.” he said. “However, Monroe EMS was busy last night, operating in challenging conditions, and emergency response times continue to be delayed. We continue to encourage anyone who doesn’t need to be on the roads to stay home.”

On Sunday, firefighters announced a new app that can be downloaded by residents to help track hydrants that are being dug out from beneath the snow. To download it, click here.

“Any resident with a hydrant on their property should clear the snow if they are physically able,” Catalano said. “If neighbors know that resident is elderly or incapable of clearing the snow, a neighbor should take over that responsibility.”
