Bajda reaches 1,000 point milestone in state playoff defeat

Masuk Panthers teammates celebrate Bailey Bajda (holding the "1000" sign) for scoring over 1,000 points in her basketball career.

MONROE, CT — A 63-39 loss to Bristol Eastern in the Class L State Tournament’s second round Tuesday might mark the end of the season, but there is a lot for the Panthers to celebrate and look forward to given the overall youth of this squad.

What’s more, junior Bailey Bajda surpassed the 1,000-point mark in her career. Bajda notched 14 points and sits on 1,002. Grace Sheppard scored nine and Maddie Farrer logged eight in the loss.

No. 9 Bristol Eastern advances to take on top seed Northwest Catholic in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

The No. 8 Panthers will have to wait until next winter, but gained valuable experience on the court. With everyone potentially back in the fold next year, Masuk will look to build on its 13-7 campaign.

Bajda is a First Team All South-West Conference selection and Sheppard took home All-SWC Colonial Division honors.

“This team was a lot of fun to coach and easy to root for,” said Panthers Coach Dan Young. “We had no seniors this year, but were led by three outstanding junior captains in Bailey Bajda, Grace Sheppard and Maddie Farrer.”

“The return of Emma and Abby Troesser was a great addition to the team, as well as the contributions of freshmen Peyton Webb and Julia Hourigan,” Young added. “This team continued to raise expectations on the court and looks forward to getting back next season.”
